Can learning a new language help to get a job?

Despite the fact that the world is getting smaller and smaller, it is getting bigger in terms of the information we have to have to survive in it.  The world is shrinking through travel and internet contact, and many people speak, or at least use English in their everyday lives, but the need for other languages is still strong.

There are many jobs available today that either require a foreign language, or that offer greater opportunities if one has a foreign language. And of course, there are many jobs that are based on foreign languages.

Careers in the hospitality industry

Careers in international banking or industry

Careers in languages and linguistics

Careers in the Foreign Service

An Economic Officer sees to the concerns of U.S. importers and exporters in foreign countries, a Political Officer coordinates with local governments in a foreign country on behalf of the U.S., a Public Diplomacy Officer will work with foreign press regarding policies and statements by U.S.  officials and a Consular Officer will process visa applications and assist American citizens in foreign countries.

Careers in Foreign Firms

Most foreign firms working in the United States will bring many of their native employees to work abroad, but they will also hire locals in the nation where they have an office.  Proficiency in, or at least some knowledge of the language of the headquarters county will be an attractive asset for a potential employee of such a firm.

    Learning a new language can help you to find a new job. If your work involves regular contact with speakers of foreign languages, being able to talk to them in their own languages will help you to communicate with them.
